A Protagonist Sues his Author (A case from Bulgarian Socialist Culture)Keywords: socialist realism , truth of life , book of life , protagonist , prototype , reader , Bulgarian literature , court of law Abstract: The text comments on the case of a Bulgarian author who wrote a novel, based on the pattern of ‘socialist realism’ (like the novels of B. Polevoy and N. Ostrovski). The protagonist – a man who has lost his arms as a result of a toy-bomb explosion during WW2 and has overcome his distress by strength of will, sues the author for a part of the fee. This case is interpreted from the viewpoint of socialist culture: the relation between reality and literature, and the conflict between propagandized idealism and material interest.
