Abstract:

Aims: The daily use of a manual wheelchair (MWC) by elderly persons, younger people and handicapped athletes produces overuse of the anatomical structures in the upper limbs in a number of subjects. This fact is responsible for degenerative and painful stress on the joints of the upper extremities and leads to additional healthcare expenditures. In this article, we present research aimed at reducing the constraints applied to the upper extremities during the propulsion of a MWC. Method: At first, we developed and validated an acquisition system designed to measure the dynamic, kinematic and electromyographic aspects involved in the propulsion of a MWC. This enabled us to study the technique used by the elderly to propel a MWC and subsequently to develop an innovating device which improves the level of comfort during use. Results: Our research led to the development and the validation of a prototype propelling- device which is economical and can be adapted to all types of MWC. The device consists in a flexible connection between the handrims and the driving wheels. Conclusion: This device provides better right-left coordination, attenuates the shock which occurs at push-off and enables users to cover a greater distance for the same effort, thereby reducing joint stress in the upper limbs.
