A Further Comparison of Real Peak Numbers(RPN)withOther Parameters of Gas Chromatographic(GC) Column Efficiency
|
Abstract:
ased on the linear relationship between GC peak width at half height( W_n ) and retention time(t_r),afurther comparison of RPN with other parameters of GC column efficiency was made, The column hold-uptime(t_0 ) and linear constants(intercept a and slope b)obtained from the relationship between W_n and t_r arevery improtant information related to column efficiency. All of the parameters of column efficiency discussedhere except N_inf are the function of a, b and t_0.N_inf is a limit of theoretical plate numbers at infinite capacity and is related only to the slope b. Therefore,N_inf is not a good paranleter fOr expressing the column efficien-cy at finite capacity region. With increasing the column temperature, the effective plate number(N_eff)for different capacity ratio(k')exhibited different variation trend. In other words,N_eff possesses an uncertain-ty due to its dependence of k'.The soparate number, TZ_(10), is independent of k'and possesses a definite-meaning correlated to column efficiency. However, its model for peak broadening is simplified.RPN is al-most the same as TZ_(10) but without any simplified treatment. In this point,RPN should be more perfect than TZ_(10) when they are used for comparison of the column efficiency of different columns or at different operating conditions.Different homologous series wereused as the reference series to measure TZ_(10) and RPN. Only small difference between the values(TZ_(10) or RPN)obtained from different homologous series was observed.
