Variations in Soil Organic Carbon Storage and the Potential for Carbon Sequestration by Topsoil Over 25 Years
|
Abstract:
Here, we analyze the storage quantity of organic carbon and the temporal and spatial distribution of topsoil in North River upstream of the Pearl River in the town of Wengyuan using ArcGIS9.3. We found that the average soil organic density of the town of Wengyuan is almost close to the average level of organic density nationwide, and has been in decline. The increase in the carbon density of paddy soil is larger than for other soil types. The mean soil organic density of mountain land and dry land had been decreasing. The high value region, which has a high organic carbon density, is located in the northwest of the town of Wengyuan and the Wengjiang River valley. The developing potential of carbon sequestration of purple soil is the greatest, while the developing potential of carbon sequestration of the vegetable garden is smallest. The high-valued region with the developing potential of carbon sequestration of topsoil is mainly located in the Wengjiang River valley and some other cultivated areas. These findings provide some reference for holding regional agriculture activity and forming agricultural policy and analyzing carbon balance.
