Abstract:

Based on the Landsat TM/ETM images of Nanjing in 1986, 1996 and 2002, as well as actual land use maps, the dynamic changes of urban land use in Jiangning District of Nanjing City were analyzed. Some analytical indexes such as transfer matrix, growth intensity index and Fractal dimensions were introduced to describe the spatial differentiation of urban land expansion. The research shows that there is a rapid growth of urban land use while significant differences in land use among regions exist during the past 16 years. The expanded area in the study area was 2666.79 hectare during period of 1986 to 1996, and 8501.22 hectare from 1996 to 2002. The growth intensity index also was 0.11 during period of 1986 to 1996, and 0.74 during period of 1996 to 2002. In central city, the growth intensity index was 5.57 during the period of 1996 to 2002. The growth has been transforming along the Tangshan-Jiangning- Tongjing road from northeast to southwest. Although all towns have been expanding quickly, the differences of urban expansion among towns is obvious. Centers of growth are concentrated on the central city as well as regions adjacent to the Yangtze River. Urban area is the major contributor to the growth of land use. The urban land area expanded with way of gradual spread from the inner to outside and along with the Yangtze River. The spatial differences of industrial land were obvious and the growth mainly happened in the northeast district, presenting a way of axial growth pattern. The manners of urban land expansion have been intensively affected by the geographical location, transportation condition and mining activities.
