Abstract:

Characteristics of interannual and seasonal droughts in Liaoning Province were analyzed in terms of drought intensity, drought duration, and drought frequency, and the compound index of meteorological drought and daily precipitation and temperature data at 22 weather stations during the period 1958 to 2008. Results show that over the years, the highest degree of day drought was the heavier drought. The severe drought and special drought have not happened yet. Drought never occurred in winter. Drought intensity showed a significantly increasing trend in years, summer, and autumn. Drought intensity of years, spring, summer, and autumn was strongest in 2000, 2001, 2000, and 1999, respectively. There was an increasing trend in recent years from the early 2000s to 2008, in which 2005 was the only year when drought did not occur. Concerning the season drought, summer drought was found to be the most serious. 1971 was the only year of the absence of drought in fifty years, followed by autumn drought and spring drought. The dryness distribution of Liaoning Province tended to be focused in some years. East Liaoning Province was less prone to drought and the drought duration was short. Dandong suffered from the lightest drought. Over the fifty years, the longest duration of drought occurred from April 28 through August 6 in 2000, 101 days in total. South Liaoning suffered frequently from drought, in which, Dalian and Yingkou Cities suffered from the most serious drought. Dalian suffered from the longest drought occurring from May 4 through November in 1999. The dryness distribution of Liaoning Province tended to be more dispersed in seasons. This study provides a basis for developing appropriate measures to reduce loss from droughts in Liaoning Province.
