Driving Forces of Cultivated Land Conversion in China

The research on driving force is the core part of the mechanism of land use change.The basic research object of cultivated land driving force is that how to find the drivers,and study their internal relationships and dynamics rules.Furthermore,we can evaluate the contribution of the target driver to the change of cultivated land resource and integrate the related drivers into a model.The relationship of the drivers is very complex.It involves many factors,such as society,economy,policy,natural environment and culture.The attribute of the drivers are different under different temporal-spatial scale.In recent years Chinese economy is increasing rapidly.The quantity of population is increasing.The rapid process of industrialization and urbanization needs more land resources than ever before.The conflict between the quantity reduction of cultivated land resource and the need of construction land and ecosystem land become more and more severe.It is necessary to strengthen the research on the driving force and driving mechanism of cultivated land resources change.It is important to find the right drivers which lead to the quantity reduction and the quality degradation of cultivated land for rational use of cultivated land resources,readjustment of land use structure,protection of cultivated land,maintenance of the quantitative dynamic equilibrium of cultivated land,formulation of regulatory policies and measures,layout of the economic development in reasonable configuration and promotion of sustainable use of cultivated land resources.Methods of documentation and comparison are employed in the paper to summarize the research status of Chinese cultivated land conversion driving forces.Some problems are presented in it.The study found that: different researcher,different temporalspatial scale,different kinds of data and different research method could cause different drivers.Different conclusion was given.It caused uniformity,continuity and comparability poor in the conclusions.How to further develop the cultivated land conversion driven research paradigm mechanism is a great challenge to the development of LCS(Land Change Science),which need to be integrated with the theoretical and methodological breakthrough.
