Farmland is the base of food production and also the major source of other human basic needs.Farmland in China makes up 70% of the world's total yet it feeds 22% of the world total population.This is an outstanding success.Meanwhile,Chinese population will increase greatly and farmland decreases continuously.The future situation of food security is serious.Among various factors threatening the sustainability of farmland,the most outstanding and the most serious one is the occupation on farmland for urban development.The central government has paid great attention to farmland conservation and regarded it as a basic national policy.However,this basic national policy has not been implemented thoroughly in practice.A number of local governments are actually driven by short term benefits,and stress unilaterally on making money with farmland.In deep thinking,the comparative lower benefits from land use for agricultural purpose is the major reason accountable for farmland decrease.Farmland decrease has caused a serious of harmful impacts on sustainable development.In order to turn out the trend,it is necessary to establish appropriate legislation,institutions and mechanisms for farmland conservation.
