An Evaluation of Sustainable Land Use in Developed Areas--A Case Study of Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province
经济发达地区土地资源可持续利用评价研究-以江苏省江阴市为例

Based on the analysis of the conception, objectives, principle and content of sustainable land use, in light with actual conditions of the Jiangyin city, an indicator system for evaluating county level sustainable land use was put forward, including 25 evaluating indicators of resources, environment, economic and social aspects. The comprehensive evaluation of sustainable land use for Jiangyin city in 1991, 1994 and 1997 was conducted, resulting in 59.26%, 62.13% and 63.85% of the evaluation value respectively. This indicated that land use in Jiangyin was in an sustainable situation. But from 1991 to 1997, the sustainability ratios of resources and environmental aspects decreased rapidly by 10.35% and the 12.23%, respectively. So problems also exist in land use in Jiangyin such as acute man land conflicts resulted from rapid reduction of cultivated land and population growth,serious industrial pollution and weakening of ecological function, and ignorence of agricultural development and unreasonable structure of agricultural sectors. Measures for coping with the above mentioned problems and for future sustainable development are also identified as to control population growth and protect cultivated land, to optimize land use structureand achieve dynamic balance of cultivatedland, to control pollution and improve environmental quality, and to increase agricultural investment and combine farming, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery.
