Observation of the Absorption and Scattering Coefficients of Atmospheric Aerosols in the North Suburb of Nanjing from October to December 2007

Abstract:
Based on the observation of absorption coefficients and scattering coefficients of the atmospheric aero-sols during October to December in 2007 in the north suburb of Nanjing, the characteristics of absorption and scat-tering coefficients under different meteorological conditions are analyzed. The results indicate that the diurnal varia-tions of the absorption and scatting coefficients of atmospheric aerosols are the most significant in hazy days, fol-lowed by that in non-hazy days, and the least pronounced in fog days. It is also found that the difference in absorp-tion coefficient and scattering coefficient between hazy days and fog days is not significant from 0000 LST to 0800 LST, but the reverse is true for the measurements from 0800 LST to 2400 LST (both the parameters are larger in fog days than in hazy days),and that the absorption and scattering coefficients are the smallest in non-hazy days. The results also show that both the absorption and scattering coefficients are remarkably reduced due to precipitation
