DETERMINANTS OF CULTIVATED LAND UTILIZATION IN CHINA AND NEW THOUGHTS FOR ADJUSTMENT

It is no doubt that cultivated land plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring the food security of China. Unfortunately, there are many factors that will exert negative or positive influence on cultivated land. With globalization, the international socio-economic environment and food security ideas have greatly changed, which have brought about many impacts on cultivated land utilization. Therefore, this paper mainly discusses the determinant of cultivated land utilization in China, and then countermeasures for feasible land use are presented. It is suggested that cultivated land areas in Western China should not be expanded and the role of key grain-production regions, such as the Nenjiang Plain, the Sanjiang Plain, the Huaibei Low Plain, the Jianghuai District, the Poyanghu Lake Plain, The Dongtinghu Lake Plain, the Jianghan Plain and the Sichuan Basin, should be strengthened. From this perspective, infrastructure construction should be strengthened in the main grain-production regions in order to encourage the peasants' enthusiasm to yield grain. Finally, it is argued the cultivated land should be used according to regional comparative advantage and, thereby, agricultural regions with competitive agricultural products can be formed.
