As a world city,urban development is regarded as a decisive factor of land use policy in Hong Kong The paper examines the characteristics of the land resources in Hong Kong,evaluates the changing land use structure and indentifies the subsequent contradictions arising from land use planning It analyses the current tendency in improper land use and discusses alternative ways in coping with rural urban land use problems following the return of Hong Kong in 1997
