Effect of Wavelet Basis and Decomposition Levels on Performance of EZW Algorithm of Different Type Images

Abstract:
The embedded zerotree wavelet(EZW)coding is a simple and yet remarkably effective image coding algorithm. There are a lot of factors influencing the performance of EZW algorithm. This paper highlights three main factors out of them: the type of image, the wavelet basis function and the number of wavelet decompositions. By numerous comparative experiments, the impact of the above three factors on the performance of EZW algorithm is examined. Through careful analysis and discussion, some correlative conclusions are drawn, which will contribute much to exert potential coding efficiency of EZW algorithm. Also, these conclusions can provide a good reference for the applications of the improved algorithms based on EZW.
