Cluster-Based Key Management in Ad Hoc Networks

Ad hoc networking can quickly put up a wireless mobile communication network without conventional net- work infrastructures. However, its flexible characteristics make security a challenge. Robust key management services are central to ensuring privacy protection in wireless Ad Hoc network settings. This paper firstly makes a survey of the recent works about key management for Ad Hoc networks. A new scheme for key management is proposed for cluster- based Ad Hoc networks using id-based signcryption. In this scheme, public key certificates are not needed and every participant can use his identity as public key. It greatly decreases the need of the ability for compution and storage of clients' terminals, as well as communication cost for system key management. Nodes are divided into several autono- mous communities based on cluster structure, which not only increases availability and scalability of networks, but also results in quick response to some emergency.
