Web Application Servers:The New Generation of Middlewares

Web application servers (WASs), which are considered to be second generation of middle wares for Web computing and the software infrastructure for enterprise information systems, provide Web middleware platforms that support for the deployment, integration, and execution of transactional Web applications. Many international known IT companies launched their products and solutions for WASs. We in this paper overview Web Application Servers, including what is Web Application Server and its functionality, category, and benchmark etc. A comparative study among some leading Web application servers is given by evaluating their functions and performance. The current state of the art for the research in WASs is also outlined, and lastly, the tendency is pointed out.
