APPLICATION OF N-DODECANE TO PHAFFIA RHODOZYMA CULTIVATION FOR STIMULATING ASTAXANTHIN PRODUCTION
|
Abstract:
Astaxanthin accumulation by Phaffia rhodozyma is strongly dependent on the dissolved oxygen concentration. Two-phase fermentation system with the addition of oxygen vector was applied to enhance oxygen transfer. The addition of oxygen carrier, n-dodecane, obviously improved the astaxanthin yield, whereas higher concentration of carrier showed somewhat inhibition to the yeast growth and astaxanthin formation. The results suggested that the the higher astaxanthin yield did not resulted from the improvement of biomass of the yeast, but directly from the oxygen transfer improvement derived from the addition of oxygen vector.
