MATING TESTS AND SYSTEMATICS IN HIGHER BASIDIOMYCETES
|
Abstract:
Incompatibility is a genotypically determined inhibition of karyogamy within a sexually reproducing system.Early studies of fungal incompatibility were of a gene- tic survey nature.Recently incompatibility tests have been widely applied in systematics to elu- cidate reproductive isolation, investigate mechanisms of speciation and delimitate species in higher Basidiomycotina. In this paper, the concepts and genetic basis of fungal incompatibility, methods and principles of mating tests, and previous studies on biological species concept and speciation are reviewed.
