This paper presented an overview of live virtual machine migration algorithms' background, motivation and the state of arts, including pre-copy migration, post-copy migration, hybrid memory copy migration and live migration based on log trace and replay. It analyzed and summarized algorithm design, key techniques, implementation mechanism, performance, etc. of these methods. It further classified and described the optimized strategies of the predominantly used pre-copy approach. Finally, this paper discussed prospects for future development and suggestions for possible extensions.
