Cascading failure model on power grid with energy dissipation and capability expansion

Abstract:
A cascading failure model based on power grid is proposed, in which energy dissipation and capability expansion are considered. The computer simulation results show that under the driven of energy dissipation and capability expansion the system can evolve to a self-organized critical status. This model well explained the self-organized critical phenomenon of power system. In addition, the measures for preventing cascading failure are studied. The results show that as far as a few key nodes are under controlled and the proper diverting methods are carried out, the failure size can be reduced greatly.
