New Region of Interest Coding Method Based on SPIHT Algorithm

In this paper,both the merits and defects of the Region Of Interest(ROI) coding algorithm in JPEG 2000 stan-dards are investigated at first.Then,according to the characteristics of the embedded bitplane coding and the human visual system,a highly efficient ROI coding algorithm based on the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree(SPIHT)algorithm is proposed.By using this algorithm,the compressed bitstreams are all embedded and suitable for progressive transmission.Finally,experiments show that the new algorithm provides much better effect of the subjective visual sensation and has satisfactory results,although the PSNR performance of the proposed algorithm at low rates is inferior to the original SPIHT algorithm.
