A PARAMETER FOR EVALUATING ABILITY OF GRAIN REFINEMENT OF SOLUTE ELEMENTS

Abstract:
The gradient of the equilibrium melting temperature on liquid side of advancing solid-liquid interface has been derived. From it, a parameter, H, used for evaluating the ability of grain refinement of solute elements has been proposed. Experiments on Al-base alloys show that the grain size of alloys decrease with increasing H value. This indicates that parameter H can be used as an index for selecting the grain refiners.
