Power generation using two kinds of phenolic compounds as substrates in MFC
|
Abstract:
The power generation and phenolic compounds degradation were studied in a two-chambered microbial fuel cell(MFC).The two kinds of phenolic compounds 2,4-dichlorophenol(DCP),p-nitrophenol(PNP),DCP-PNP) were used as the substrates in the MFC that was inoculated with anaerobic sludge of municipal sewage plant, when connected 1 900 Ω external resistor. The results showed that the electric cycle was about 225 h,the maximal voltage output obtained was 393.7 mV and the coulombic efficiency(CE) was 13.73% when DCP(50 mg/L) was used as the sole substrate;the degradation efficiency of DCP increased to 64.52%,accordingly,the degradation efficiency of PNP was 94.47% when DCP-PNP was used as the co-substrate.It was indicated that DCP and PNP can be used as the substrates in the MFC for generating power and biodegraded effectively.
