Effect of different acclimation on performance of microbial fuel cells using phenol as substrate
|
Abstract:
Single chamber microbial fuel cells(MFCs)were inoculated with anaerobic activated sludge. The effects of three different domestications (batch acclimation, direct acclimation and indirect acclimation) on the phenol degradation and MFC performance were investigated. The results show the phenol degradation rate in MFC under the closed-circuit is 10%~20% faster than that under the open-circuit. It implied that MFC can accelerate the degradation of phenol in the production of electricity. When MFCs use 600 mg/L phenol as the sole fuel, phenol degradation rate in MFC with three different domestications is more than 90% after 68 h. Compared to the other two acclimation, it is most conducive to improve phenol degradation and MFC performance under batch acclimation conditions, the maximal power density arrives at 31.3 mW/m2, phenol degradation rate increases 7%~20%.
