Analysis of EEM fluorescence spectra of dissolved organic matter in improved AO combined process

Through excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra analysis, the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the improved AO combined process of Zhuyuan Second Wastewater Treatment Plant were studied. Meanwhile, the comparison of DOM between traditional aeration activated sludge process and anoxic/aerobic process was also carried out. The results indicated that the fluorescent components in DOM were mainly protein-like (Peak A and Peak B) and humic-like fluorophores (Peak C). The fluorescent intensity was reduced by 14%~60% and the structure of protein-like fluorophores and humic-like fluorophores was changed during the treatment process. Humic acid produced by microbial metabolism with fluorescence-based groups was primary source of humic acid in DOM.
