Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue via side-glowing optical fiber under visible light
|
Abstract:
The photocatalytic system of side-glowing optical fibers (SOFs) was used to treat dyeing wastewater with high concentration and chroma. In this study, methylene blue (MB) was chosen as goal degradant. Ag+/TiO2 powder was prepared by sol-gel method, and characterized by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy of solid diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Ag+/TiO2 catalytic activity under the visible light irradiation was evaluated. The authors investigated different reaction conditions between quartz core and plastic side-glowing optical fiber system. The impact factors include the dosage of catalyst, quantity of optical fiber, illumination intensity, and pH and so on. The changes of MB degradation efficiency was discussed. The results show that the MB was degraded by more than 90% within 8 h under the conditions that the dosage of Ag+/TiO2 was 11.67 g/L, initial concentration of MB was 20 mg/L, the quality of SOFs was 500, pH was about 11 and the external light source was 300 W.
