Evaluation of dissolved organic matter removal in municipal wastewater based on fluorescence regional integration
|
Abstract:
Based on fluorescence regional integration (FRI),excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy was used to evaluate dissolved organic removal during municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that the FRI can help to characterize the variation trend of organic contents which were easily degradable, bio-degradable, and refractory. In addition, it can be used to effectively identify the fingerprints of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in municipal wastewater. Approximately 50% of fluorescence organic matters within municipal wastewater were protein-like degradable organics, which could be largely removed in anoxic zone of aeration tank. The DOM removal was almost completed after 225 m of plug flow downstream in the aeration tank. The Pearson correlation indices between TOC and normalized integral volumes of region II and III were 0.964 and 0.970, respectively, which were higher than the other fluorescence indices.
