Study on potato starch wastewater treatment by yeasts

Potato starch wastewater belongs to high concentration organic wastewater with about COD 30 000 mg/L and BOD5 15 000 mg/L and better biodegradability. Based on the main pollutant components containing starch, protein, soluble fiber within the wastewater, six strains of yeasts were selected for studying on the biodegradation of such pollutants. The above-mentioned yeasts and the mixed yeasts were inoculated and cultured by using potato starch wastewater as culture media respectively. The results showed that all tested yeasts had good biodegraded efficiencies to the wastewater, and its removal rate in mixed yeasts was higher than in any single yeast. The reactivity and mycelia biomass of the mixture yeasts in the continuous flow test were also higher with MLSS approximately 12 g/L and COD removal rate over 77%.
