Optimization of extracellular polymeric substance extraction method
|
Abstract:
Different doses of cation exchange resin (CER) and different pH sludge solution were used to optimize the extraction efficiency of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The results showed that EPS extract concentration increased as CER dose increased, but there was different tendency in different components of EPS. The best CER dose for TOC was 100 g CER/g VSS. However, the best CER dose for protein, carbohydrate and DNA was 70 g CER/g VSS. It was clear that pH value had less effect on TOC, carbohydrate and DNA, but had more influence on protein. EPS extraction process can be separated as three stages: flat increased stage, rapid increased stage and stabilized stage.
