Are chaos and catastrophe theories relevant to environmental sciences?

Data acquired in the area of Environmental Sciences are by their very nature often discontinuous and abrupt. As such, the mathematical theories of catastrophe and chaos may be of use in analyzing such scientific data and in formulating mathematical models.
