The classification of islands and reefs is of great significance in understanding the nature and in exploiting the resources of the islands and reefs. The authors propose the following criteria in classifying them: the genetical type, the distribution pattern and the composition of the islands and reefs. The aurhors wont on to classify the Miaodao Islands on this basis.
