Abstract:

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the effluent of an anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A2O) process of a municipal wastewater treatment plant was fractionated into four different fractions using adsorption resins. Thereafter, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectroscopy and genotoxicity of each fraction were determined. The DOC values of the hydrophilic substrates (HIS) and the hydrophobic acids (HOA) showed these were the main fractions of DOM, comprising 65% and 24% of the total sample. UV spectroscopy indicated that HIS contained the most aromatic compounds among the DOM fractions. However, the specific UV absorbance (SUVA) value of HIS was similar to those of HOA and hydrophobic bases (HOB), suggesting that the aromatic chemicals divided by the DOC concentration in the fractions were at a similar level. The wastewater exhibited genotoxicity and HIS and HOA made the main contributions to the genotoxicity of the total sample.
