Effect of extracellular polymeric substances in SMBR on membrane filtration
|
Abstract:
This paper investigated the amount and composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge from mixed liquor as well as those in sludges from a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic membrane, respectively, in a Submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) treating river water in Shanghai, and analyzed the characteristics of these sludges. The effect of EPS and sludge hydrophobicity on filtration of membrane was studied. The experiment results showed that total amount of EPS in sludge from mixed liquor was more than those from membrane surface, and the ratio of EPS_P/EPS_C ranked mixed liquor
