Abstract:

Gas chromatography interfaced to mass spectrum (GC MS) was used to determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 11 municipal sludges derived from mainland and HongKong of China. The content of PAHs in different sludges ranged from 2271mg/kg to143 80mg/kg, decreasing in the order: Lanzhou sludge>Zhuhai sludge>Beijing sludge>Guangzhou sludge>Foshan sludge>Wuxi sludge>Shatian sludge (HongKong)>Yuanlang sludge (HongKong)>Dapu sludge (HongKong)>Xi'an sludge>Shenzhen sludge. The contents of anthracene, acenaphthene, benzo(a)anthracene, and chrysene were much higher than that of any other compounds. The level of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) in sludges from Zhuhai and Beijing exceeded the national standard which is fixed in 3 0mg/kg dry weight of sludge applied to agricultural land. The highest content of each compound was measured respectively in Lanzhou sludge, Zhuhai sludge, Beijing sludge, and Guangzhou sludge. Though distribution patterns of PAHs in different sludges were different, they were common in that only a few compounds with 3, 4 benzene rings were predominant, while others with 2,5, and 6 benzene rings usually minor.
