Water solubility enhancement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by mixed surfactant solutions
|
Abstract:
Water solubility enhancements of naphthalene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, phenanthrene and pyrene in micellar solutions of single surfactant and binary mixed surfactant were studied. The solubilization is relative to the structure and concentrations of surfactants the solution as well as properties of organic solutes. The sequence of water solubility enhancements at surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) is TritonX100 > Brij 35 > TritonX305, negatively correlates to the hydrophile lipophile balance (HLB) of surfactant. PAHs are synergistically solubilized by mixed anionic nonionic surfactant solutions. The synergistic power of the mixed surfactants for PAHs is SDS TX305 > SDS Brij35 > SDS TX100, appears to be positively relative to HLB of nonionic surfactants and the K ow of PAHs.The synergism noted for the mixed surfactants is attributed to the CMC decrease of the surfactant solution and the increase of partition coefficient ( K mc ) of solute between micelle and aqueous phase.
