EFFECTS OF WATER ACIDIFICATION ON ALGAE
|
Abstract:
Ecological effects of water acidification on algae were investigated in microcosm(250ml) with fresh-water organisms of various trophic levels and using algal bioassay with Scenedesmus obliquus. The significant inhibitory influences of acidification on algae were observed, and the 48h-EC50 and 96h-EC 50 for Scenedesmus obliquus were 4.45 and 4. 65,respectively. Algae photosynthesis showed a strong buffer capacity to acidity at pH 5.5 and above, which was weakened remarkably when pH value dropped below 5.0. The threshold value of low pH for aquatic system ranged from 5.0 to 5.5. The algae species composition and community character in two small acidified waters (pH4.7) were investigated as well.
