Abstract:

A model evaluating influence of COD on a partial nitrification-ANAMMOX biofilm process is incorporated on the basis of the heterotrophic growth as described in ASM3, supplemented with a previously published model for the autotrophic reactions (Nitrification and ANAMMOX). This biokinetic model has been incorporated in the biofilm compartment of the AQUASIM simulation software. This incorporated model can simulate the activities of heterotrophs and autotrophs involved in a biofilm, and related reactions between COD oxidation, denitrification, nitrification and ANAMMOX, etc. can be qualitatively demonstrated. Simulations indicate that COD in the influent has no important influence on the partial nitrification-ANAMMOX biofilm process. Besides efficient COD removal, a total nitrogen removal efficiency of about 90% could be expected. Furthermore, ANAMMOX is a major contributor to the total nitrogen removal and conventional denitrification only takes a share of <20% in the total nitrogen removal. COD presence in the influent only increases the optimal DO level for the maximal dinitrogen gas production. With normal loads and working conditions, further simulations reveal that there could be ANAMMOX organisms in normal biofilm systems. In other words, ANAMMOX might be present in many nitrifying biofilm systems.
