A study on the surface biochemical characteristics of suspended particulate matter in the Yangtze River estuary
|
Abstract:
During the spring tide on January 3 1999, the samples collected at 14 stations of the North Passage in the Yangtze River estuary were analyzed using FACScan flow cytometer. The results showed that: (1) The concentrations of natural fluorescent particles varied from 0 10% to 3 70%, showing a low density of phytoplankton and microorganism in the investigated area. (2) The concentrations of the particles dyed by fluorescein isothiocyanate(FITC) were 78% to 96% with a nonuniform distribution. It is suggested that the FITC fluorescence method can be used to determine the change of the surface biochemical characteristics of the suspended particulate matter in the biogeochemical process of the Yangtze River estuary.
