Membrane Bio-reactor Technology for the Treatment of Water and Wastewater
|
Abstract:
A review was made on the concept, categoriesand characteristics of membrane bioreactors andthe advances in their R & D for use in the treatment of water and wastewater. The bioreactors, including the immersed. hollow fiber mem.brapebioreactors, the crossflow filtration membranebioreactors and the extractive membrane bioreactors, were described by giving eight examples ofmembrane bioreactors for the treatment of- waterand wtstewater, and their respective techlhalparameters and treatment eHiciencies. All ofthese membrane bioreactors used an activatedsludge process in their bioreactors and wereequipped with an ultrafiltration membrape, a ndcrofihration membrane or an extractive meinbfsnein their membrane units. They have been developed for the purposes of nitrogen removal, organic pollutants removal, or degradation of prioritytoxic substances. The membrane bioreactors hadhigher removal efficiencies, for example, a CODremoval of up to 80%-90% and a NH3-N removal of over 98%. There was a lower turbidityin their efnuents which are thus suitable forreuse. It was pointed out that more and more attention hAs been paid in many countries to thethembrane bioreactor as technology for recyclingor reusing wastewater as a secondary resource.
