Study on the Level of Mercury in Fishmen''s Hair Since the Elimination of Major Sources of Mercury Pollution in the Songhuajiang River
|
Abstract:
Since the major sources of mercury pollution in theSonghuajiang River were eliminated & years ago, thelevel of mercury in the hairs of fishmen living alongthe river has reduced by 78. 30%-82.5% ascompared with that in the 1970s,and by 71. 48 % ascompared with that in the early 1980s,showing thatobvious health benefit and environmental benefithave been obtained. However,it was found that sofar the fishmen living along the river still have asignificantly higher level of hair mercury than thoseliving in a non-mercury polluted area, and 1.92%of them have a level of hair mercury exceeding thenational diagnostic standards. They were found to bemainly distributed along the first Songhuajiangreaches of the river downstream Sanchahekou.Extremely less number of cases for the fishmenliving along the second Songhuajiang reaches of theriver were found to have a level of hair mercuryexceeding the national diagnostic standards, and thecauses for this were discussed also.
