Theoretical and Experimental Study on Curved Liquid Surface by Means of Optical Method

Abstract:
A simple technique for study on curved liquid surface by means of optical method was developed.When a collimated-beam illuminates upon the symmetric meniscus surface in a vertical direction,the reflection pattern which contained a round dark area is observed experimentally,and the relationship between the size of the dark area and the illuminated area covered by the beam is found.While the diameter of the beam changed from small to large,the size of the dark area changes in the opposite direction.Based on the geometrical optical theory,the analytic expression of the curved liquid surface profile is derived.Compared with the Yong-Laplace equation,they are in good agreement.
