Characteristic Analysis of Surface Wave Sensor Based on Negative Refractive Index Material

Abstract:
The condition of existence of surface wave using negative refractive index materials is solved using the rigorous electromagnetic wave theory.It is shown that the surface wave can be produced for both polarizations for the present negative refractive index material.The wave number of the surface wave propagating on the interface between the negative refractive index material and positive refractive index material and its excitation condition are concluded.To aim at the application on sensing,the corresponding performance parameters(e.g.,the thickness,polarization status,sensing range and linearity)are analyzed.The results indicate that the sensors using the present material have great advantage over traditional metal surface plasma sensor.
