Abstract:

Surface properties of Kapton without and with ogranosiloxane coating were analyzed after exposure to ground state fast atomic oxygen (AO) radiation in a ground simulated atomic oxygen beam facility.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,I.R.spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the chemical and physical changes of the surface of materials tested.The test results indicated that the change in the surface chemistry of Kapton induced by AO were oxidation degradation of polymer and substantial change in structure of supermoleculars and morphology of the surface layer.It is further found in the experiment that siloxane film provides excellent protection from AO irradiation.The irradiation results in formation of SiO 2 left on the surface of the coating,thus,providing protection from further attack by the energetic oxygen atoms.
