BEHAVIOUR OF PASSIVITY BREAKDOWN OF TITANIUM IN HALIDE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS
|
Abstract:
The electrochemical measurement and chemical analytical techniques are used to study the behaviour of passivity breakdown of commercial pure Ti in halide aqueous solutions. The results show that the passivity breakdown of titanium is closely related to the evolution of halogen by the discharge of halide anions on oxide / solution interface. It is proposed that the localized evolution of halogen changes the original passive state into the non-passive surroundings and makes this site of oxide film grow uncapablely; passivity breakdown occurs at this site due to peak electric field strength. This mechanism gives a good explanation of the experimental results.
