SURFACE MODIFICATION OF AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL FOR COMBINED IMPROVEMENT IN WEAR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE
|
Abstract:
A new surface modification method of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) microwave plasma source ion nitriding is introduced to surface freatment of austenitic stainless steel for combined improvement in wear and corrosion resistance. The experimental results show that the modified layers possess high hardness, good wear resistance, and good corrosion resistance in 1%NaCl and 1 mol/L H 2SO 4 solutions. This nitriding effect is similar to that by using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). The new method with special features of low temperature and low working pressure provides great experimental flexibility, low unit cost and technologically simple apparatus design, thus leading to a attractive industrial application.
