Abstract:

The mechanism of a pitting inhibitor for 304 stainless steel in neutral NaCl solution is studied by means of some eletrochemical methods, such as anodic polarization curves, the current-time cycles for pit growth and EIS. This pitting inhibitor is a mixture which consists of sodium lauyl sulpate, lauyl alcohol and sodium perchlorate. The research results prove that the mixture with proper ratio of the components can completely prevent 304 stainless steel from pitting corrosion in neutral 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution. It also exhibits good corrosion inhibition for 304 stainless steel in solutions with higher concentration of NaCl. The mechanism based on reductibility of inorganic compound and solubilization action of surfactant and polar organic compound is discussed.
