Shortly after his graduation from the first class of the Geological Institute in 1916, Prof. Li joined the Geological Survey of China and played as one of the leading role in geologic mapping almost covering the whole country. In 1927, he was appointed the chief scientist in charge of the exploration team for systematic excavation of the Peking Man site in Zhoukoudian near Beijing. In 1928, he was one of founding members of the Institute of Geology of former Academic Sinica.Since liberation, he was serving as a member of Geological Planning Committee of the new government. He was also the chief geological engineer of Ministry of Water Resources. In short, Prof. Li was a pioneer in modern geology of China. He made important contribution in the areas of regional geology, geological survey, hydrogeology and engineering geology, exploration of mineral resources, water resource and hydroelectric power, as well as a better understanding in the researches of the Quaternary glaciations.
