AN ECOLOGICAL REANALYSIS ON THE FACTORS RELATED TO SOCIAL SPATIAL STRUCTURE IN GUANGZHOU CITY

This paper studied the soctal spatial structure of Guangzhou city by factorial ecologicalanalvsis and cluster analysis(WARD method).Based on the data of 1990 national census,theresult obtained from a principal component analysis of 47 variables across 91 subdistricts inGuangzhou city shows the most important five principal components. Those account for morethan 70% percent of total variance.Accourding to the factor scores,the Guangzhou City can be divided into seven types ob-tained from a cluster analysis(WARD method).The mechanism forming the spatial patterns of social areas mainly includes five factors.Before this paper,a resemble studing had been undertaken by Xu Xueqiang et al in 1985.Bycontrasting the two results,it was found that the degree of social spatial differentiation inGuangzhou becomes more remarkable. The changes mainly show the moving of population tothe suburbs,the improving of housing conditions and the creation of newly development area.
