Abstract:

Secretion of royal jelly is an important function of the hypopharyngeal glands of worker honey bee. Royal jelly is used to feed honey bee larvae and queens.Hypopharyngeal glands of infected worker bees showed the area between the intracellular ductulcs and the outer layer membrane was greatly reduced in 5-6 days old infected worker bee as contrasted with that of the healthy bees. The reduction of the outer layer area of intracellular ductulcs in hypopharyngeal glands of sacbrood-infected bee suggested that royal jelly secreted was much less than in healthy bees of the same age.The gland of diseased bee showed the disappearance of the rough endo-plasmic rccticulum and fewer ribosomes were seen in the gland of diseased bee than in the glands of healthy bees. There were variations in special functional state of the cell. In infected bee, remnants of mitochondria were observed in hypopharyngeal glands cells, while the mitochondria of diseased bee were transformed into large vacuoles and enlarged lysosome transformed into myelinlikc membranes.
