A STUDY ON THE FOOD AND ASSIMILATE HABITS OF ANTS IN VARIOUS HABITATS
|
Abstract:
The present paper deals with a study on the food and assimilate habits of ants in various habitats. In various habitats (farm-land, forest and a resident centre), we found that a number of Formicinae and Myrmicinae in a widespread or general distribution; Ponerinae and Dolichoderinae less than above two subfamilies even no distribution. There are two peaks of feeding time, i. e. 8:00-9:00 and 16:00-19:00. The analysis of food shows that all ant groups are omnivorous. The result obtained shows that ant's feeding in various habitats and microhabitats are affected by microclimate factors, the temperature being the leading factor. On the other hand, the humidity and wind play an indirect role, whereas the light is one of essential conditions.
