ON THE CLASSIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE SINIPERCINAE FISHES (FAMILY SERRANIDAE)
|
Abstract:
The sjnipercine fishes are one of the economically important freshwater fishes in China. They are widely distributed in the waters of the country, but only a few species have been found in Korea, Japan and north Vietnam. Based on the comparative observation of the wide collections of the fishes from China and specimens from Japan and Korea, the Sinipercinae can be classified into 11 species belonging to 3 genera in East Asia. Their geographical distribution is given in taole 2, from which it is obvious that the sini-percine fishes are mainly distributed in China except in Taiwan Province. Siniperca chuatsi and S. scherzeri, being distributed from Red River to northeastern China and in Korea, are two species dispersing over low and high latitudes. Coreoperca whiteheadi is found in south China and in the Red River of north Vietnam. C. kawamebari is restricted in Japan and Korea, while C. herzi may occur in Korea only. The existance of C. herzi in China is somewhat doubtful, though it was mentioned by previous writers. Coreosiniperca roulei, the single species of the third genus, is in south China only. 9 out of the 11 species of Sinipercinae are distributed in Chinese waters. It is clear that China is the chief locality of the sinipercine fishes and that majority of species are found in south Yangtze vally and the tributaries of the Pearl River. This area can be the centre of distribution of Sinipercinae.
